Help transcribe DTTS! We’ll link to your projects to say thanks!
One of the things I really want to do to improve the Don’t Touch The Screen experience is to include transcripts of each show. And one of the ways I’d love to get there involves … you.
I know: you’re busy. You have kids. And a startup (or similar webnerd business). And a spouse that does way more work than he/she signed up for when you pitched the idea(s) of your webnerd business and/or kids. So I don’t blame you if you steer clear.
But if I know webnerds, I know you like playing with shiny new open-source technology. And I just found a really cool one to share with you. It’s called Crosswrite, and it’s written by webnerd dad Ben Crowder. It’s an installable, open-source web app (built in PHP) for transcribing things like … Don’t Touch The Screen. This app is super-new. As in, it’s only 12 git commits old, and a full third of those involve updating the README. So, it’s beta and all that. But it’s impressive.
I’ve installed it (super-easy, BTW), and you can check it out, at help.donttouchthescreen.com. Just pick one of the episodes, find the relevant spot on the text file, and transcribe away. You can use the hotkeys listed on the page to skip back/forward by 5 or 30 seconds … a really cool feature for this.
One quick note: Crosswrite doesn’t currently work on Firefox. So you’ll have to use Chrome or Safari to work with it.
If you happen to add a decent chunk of copy, please let me know, and I’ll thank you and link to a project of yours from the show notes.
Thanks!
